WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- The mayor of a New Zealand town wants a nude cycling race to be called off - because the participants won't be wearing helmets.

Nude cycle ride upsets Tasman District mayor John Hurley who has complained to police about today's event
A nude cycle ride has ruffled the collar of the Tasman District mayor.

One hundred people are expected to take part in the clothing-optional ride around Golden Bay today.

Mayor John Hurley has made a complaint to local police on behalf of residents.

He says the ride has been divisive and the community expects something to be done to ensure general standards of decency.

Organisers have made changes to today's route so participants steer clear of the centre of town.

Kay Hannon, who runs a clothes-free bed and breakfast in Lake Tekapo, says the mayor needs to lighten up a bit.

She says the ride is part of a world wide movement against oil dependency and a fun way to express freedom of choice.
